4 Home Staging Mistakes to Avoid

Preparing to sell your home? How exciting!

When selling a home, it’s important to stage it appropriately. Many resources are available to help people effectively set up their homes to entice buyers. Still, it’s just as important to know what not to do when staging a home.

Here are four home staging mistakes to avoid when selling your home.

It’s too dark!

Sure, not all houses are built with opportunities for gorgeous natural light, but there are some sneaky ways to brighten up a room. One of the biggest things is to be aware of is how much dark paint is on the walls. Dark accent walls can be trendy, but make sure you think about the space you are painting. Too many dark walls will make the room feel smaller and slightly depressing.

Be careful with the holiday decorations.

There is nothing wrong with selling and buying a home during the holiday season. There is excitement in the air, and holiday decorations add a warm, festive feel to a house. Just be careful about how many holiday decorations you plan to display and the style in which you do it. Remember, you don’t want the room to feel cluttered or too personal – consider keeping large decor items and homemade ornaments in storage while showing your home this year.

Excessive amounts of furniture.

We all know the “too much clutter” rule when staging a home – but this also applies to furniture. When prospective buyers walk through your home, they want the opportunity to picture their own furniture within the space. If they have to navigate through the house around oversized couches and bookshelves, it’s hard to imagine anything else. Not to mention, too much furniture can make a room feel small.

Don’t forget storage spaces.

Purchasing a home is a big deal – when someone is viewing their potential future purchase, they will look at every component of the house. This includes closets, cabinets, drawers, garages, and more. Make sure all storage spaces are decluttered, and don’t be afraid to style them in an aesthetically pleasing way.
